What this calculator does
Enter an original price and a discount percentage, and this calculator shows the final price and how much you save. It also supports a second, stacked discount — the common "extra 10% off already-reduced prices" scenario — applied to the already-discounted price, not the original.
The formula
Final price = price × (1 − discount1 ÷ 100) × (1 − discount2 ÷ 100). Amount saved = original price − final price. The "effective discount" shown is the total percentage saved off the original price, which is not simply the two percentages added together.
Worked example: a single discount
A ₹2,000 item at 20% off: final price = 2,000 × 0.80 = ₹1,600. You save ₹400, an effective discount of 20%.
Worked example: stacked discounts
The same ₹2,000 item at 20% off, plus an extra 10% off that reduced price: first discount brings it to ₹1,600, then the second 10% is applied to ₹1,600, not the original ₹2,000: 1,600 × 0.90 = ₹1,440. You save ₹560 total — an effective discount of 28%, not the 30% you'd get by simply adding 20% + 10%. This is the single most common discount-math mistake: stacked percentage discounts never simply add together.
Why stacked discounts don't add up
Each discount percentage applies to whatever the price is at that point, not to the original price. Because the base shrinks after the first discount, the second discount's rupee value is smaller than it would be on the original price — so two discounts of 20% and 10% together always save less than a flat 30% would.

No — this is the most common discount-math mistake. Because the second discount applies to the already-reduced price, not the original, stacked discounts always add up to less than the sum of the two percentages. 20% + 10% stacked works out to a 28% effective discount, not 30%.
Mathematically it doesn't matter — applying 20% then 10% gives the same final price as applying 10% then 20%, since multiplication is commutative. What matters is applying each discount to the running price, not the original price twice.
Divide the sale price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). For example, a ₹1,200 sale price after a 20% discount means the original price was 1,200 ÷ 0.80 = ₹1,500.
